Eleanor and Park novel reflection

Eleanor and Park was amazing book for me because the scene and the character is about the same age as me, plus the authors used a lot of creative words. As I read the book, there are many aspects in the books that made this book as a not modern era likes the technology, transportation, and the society around it. I believe that Eleanor and Park was take place in the Omaha, Nebraska, over the course of the character school year, which is from start of fall 1986 to the end of summer in 1987. The book was very interesting to read because Rainbow Rowell wrote in a third person perspective, which allow me to see and analyse each of the characters clearly and better. Eleanor by far is my favorite character of this book, she is a grade ten student that has move from other school to the new high school that Park learned. She was famous by her uniqueness apparent like her giant red curly hair, wearing men’s clothing and have unusual accessories on her body that the other student in the school doesn’t have. This is not enough to know Eleanor Douglas, she is more interesting than that. At her first day of school, no one in the school bus want to room for her and many students bullied her in any ways they can. After, a while Park’s was open for her to sit near him, but not in a wanting way. Eleanor is a very intellectual student and she is very good in her literacy class. Beside having to deal with kids who bullied her, she have to deal a serious problem at home. Eleanor got a big family that have seven members total in it, include Eleanor herself, her mother, her abusive and very alcoholic stepdad named Richie and her four little brother and sisters. Moreover, her family is in poverty, which make everything harder, she sleep in a bunk bed with three of her other sibling. Because of her family living condition like this, she got no privacy because and no freedom like the other teenagers.

Navigate around Phnom Penh to complete a certain mission

Crossing roads in Phnom Penh, negotiating the prices of a certains goods and services with differents retails sellers, riding tuk tuk around Phnom Penh is one of the thing that I’m not feeling comfortable to do. I was always feel that if I do so, there will be something bad happen to me or I will get loss in some ways. However, as I getting bigger, more mature and more tasks to do in Phnom Penh, I feel that it is about the right time for me to develop this skill because being able to use app in phone to navigate Phnom Penh, buyer things in the right place and price will benefit me for the rest of my life. After, I heard that I was getting this opportunity to do a certains task in Phnom Penh in a group without any adult, I was so excited. The main theme of this experiential learning is that I go around Phnom Penh to complete three different missions with a limited amount of money and time. We got about 20 dollars and three hours to do these missions. Therefore, my team and I have to be smart on what we are doing, the first thing that we did is that we were going through all the tasks and see which one that is closest to the starting the point and it will also allow us to do other tasks without having to wait about it. Photocopy and scanning the AP book to pdf file is the ideal choice for us because we have a clue of where is that going to be and also photocopy the book and scanning it can take along times, which is fine for us because we can use that time to do the next mission. As we all know that, Phnom Penh is a crowded place and you can literally find anything you want, however, it got a certain regions that famous for certain things. I love that we were able to find a commercial printing house, which cost will cost us less money. Gathering the insurance information about the moto is quite challenging for us. But most of all we had a lot of experiences and fun.

Researching on Pchum Benh Holiday

One of the thing that Khmer essential focusing on this years is researching skill. Five weeks ago, we had to write a research paper on the topic of Pchum Benh holiday. We had to research about what is the word Pchum Benh mean, the history of the holiday from the three difference types of gods and believe, the reason behind why did this holiday happen, the structure and protocol of the ceremony, the difference kinds of evils, and the general believe on the holiday. One week of research isn’t enough for us to complete this research because there are too many believe and information about this holiday. But after the research, the most fascinating information of the research was seeing the level of Cambodian citizen believe and respect on the religion and culture. The big take away from this lesson is that there are a lot of history and believe to every holiday in Cambodia.

ROV robotic is complicated, but exciting!

The ocean cover about 72% of the planet. As a Cambodia citizen, I am proud that we have ocean and all the amazing creature in the ocean. Not many country have the resource that we are having. Cambodia ocean is one of the factor that capture international and national tourist to visit go on their holiday. One of the thing that the tourist expected to have when they visit Kep, kampot and Sihanoukville is the seafood, especially crab. Therefore, the demand of seafood in Cambodia is exceedingly high all of the season. Because there are such a high demand of seafood, the fisherman’s are willing to do anything to supplies the needs. This idea lead to a terrible action, which is illegal fishing. This problem create the Marine Conservation of Cambodia to exist. MCC is an organization whose mission is to protect and conserve Cambodia’s marine biodiversity and habitats.Inspire by MCC and researcher from all around the world who said that it hard to survey fish in deep and far distance and conserve the ocean meaning that I can do something to help. We thought about drone, drone can fly in the air. Why don’t we create something that can drive underwater with an ability to capture a staple, clear footage, collecting survey, mapping the location of the reef and so on. Our intention is to build a submarine that have the ability to capture a stable, clear, high resolution footage and can survey the different kind of fish with clear information and picture of the species, and other creature and identify it. Furthermore, our ambition is to create a sensor that the submarine the trolling zone in the ocean. Currency, it doesn’t exist yet, it still a concept. Therefore, now we are researching and learning all the science behind a ROV robot. Four weeks ago, what we had done is creating the first basic submarine followed by Sea-perch curriculum that basically can move forward and backward and go up and down. This simple design had help us to understand the buoyancy of the robot, the framework that worked best, the best placed to mount the thruster and more. Currently, we are working on researching and designing our own framework that is unique and powerful. Beside doing the framework, we are also researching on the electronic hardware such as the thruster, esc module, propeller that will suit our design and the requirement the most. If this exist, we would help thousands of marine scientist to compile their research much more efficient, can discovered the ocean world in a deeper and a further regions that might be dangerous for scientist to go, video and the picture of the species. In conclusion, we hope to work with more professional engineer and coder to make this wonderful concept exist as soon as possible.

Coming of age narrative is tough but powerful!

The first unit of literacy essential for me was the Coming of age narrative essay. The essay is to write an event, or someone have marks a major transition in a person’s life. This writing will reflect the moment of my life that have changed me to a wiser and more matured person. One of the challenges in this assignment was choosing the ideal theme to write about, because my life have many moments that changed me as a person. There are nine main theme to chooses, I decided to choose a theme called “Something that I’m grateful for”. The reason that I choose this theme because I very grateful for a person to come into my life , which has help me to become a stronger person. Another issue that I had when I tried to form this essay together was the finding the most appropriate hook that most convince the readers and turned my event into life. No matter what the challenges are, I managed to work through the problems and learned from the problem that I had. “Love is in the air; love is everything, love is about caring, and love is everywhere.” In my narrative essay hook, I used three main skills such as parallel structure, anaphora and metaphor. My essay titled as Love has transformed my whole life. I’m not going to tell you what is it about, but I’m going to spotlight some of the best part.

“She was the key that unlocked my door to this new and better world. After, I learnt from her more, I had progressively started to understand that time management and choosing the right works to do are very essential aspects to being a good student and prevailing in life.”

“People around me have said relationships have adverse effects on student learning, and they are risky and foolish. However, this phrase does not apply to me; it has the opposite effect.”

“One thing I can say from this love, I believed I have proved those people and myself wrong. Love has transformed my whole life and made a better person out of me.”

Investigating on the potential dinosaur footprints in Cambodia

The first exploration of 2017-2018 school year for me was the Investigation on Dinosaur footprint in Cambodia. It was a seven weeks long. The project have a team of 10 and two facilitators. The biggest mission of this exploration was to investigate and validate if there actually any dinosaur in Cambodia. In 2015, the DMA of Thailand have found some dinosaur footprint at Battambong province, Cambodia. The problems was that no one have actually verified that it was a real footprint or not. For that reason, it inspired our group to do a closer look at the investigation. We went to Battambong, to see the real site of the footprint. We have found sixteen footprints in that site. After, knowing that there are some potential footprints, we need to do more research. We thought that we can’t do this alone, we are not paleontologist. Therefore, we created a report that contains all of the informations such as, the site and the landmark and the footprint itself, in order for us to send this report to other experts. So, we then worked with five paleontologists around the globe to validate and help us on the footprint that we have discovered. While, waiting for the paleontologist to do their job, we also worked a lot with validate it ourself as well. What we did was, we read many scientific reports about the footprint that have been found that relevant to us such as the theropod and the pterosaur. After, talking with paleontologist and doing our own research, we have found out that out of 16 difference dino footprint that we have found, five of them are 95% sure that it was real the dinosaur footprint. The project have not end, there are some people still continue to work on the project, in order to have the final decision on the footprint and also focus more on the outreach part and the preservation part.  Stay tune to my upcoming post!

Arrow Dot Arduino Programming course strengthened my electronic skill

After my wonderful and intense internship at the Arrow Dot Electronic Institute on my summer break, I was provided an amazing opportunity to take part on their Introduction course on programing Arduino micro-controller and electronic. The course that were provided was free of charge because the institute want to return something back to my internship. This course was taken by various group of audiences from university students to professional who have electronic career. I was the youngest among the group, but I did not take the pressure as my constraint, instead I pushed myself harder to understand the concepts. The course have taught me about the difference kind of arduino sensors (thermistor, LDR, Ultrasonic), difference kinds of arduino modules (TFT, LCD, IR receiver), and essentials electronic components. It have been three months that I am devoted six hours on the weekend of my time to learn about this field. The main reason that I took this course was that it is important to understand electronic, because electronic is everywhere and we used it in every day of our life. After, the introduction course, I will be taking the advance course for another three month. Stay tune to my upcoming post!

Researching what is research

In order for us to do good at something, we need to really understand the foundation of those tasks. Therefore, the mission of our Khmer essential is to research about anything and potential take all of those research information to create a book that can be use all over Cambodia and the worlds. The first week of this lecture, we did a lot of research the word research from five main difference source, two from the Cambodian dictionary and the others from Oxford, Longman, and Google. The conclusion of this research is that all the sources got the same meaning. In addition to the word, we also did research on the potential space and source that we can use for any research paper. The text below is our definition in Khmer:

Projects In Khmer Essential

There are five essential mini projects we have learned and worked on the last seven weeks. Those project is a skill in Khmer everyone needs to become a better writer, reader, speaker and listener.

  1. The first topic we studied about was composing a formal speech to many audiences. Performing a formal speech in Cambodia is tough since the language needed to respect the structure of the culture and the ranking of the audiences. We can’t just express hello and introduce the speech, it includes many more protocols we have to follow to make the speech become eligible. The text below is an example:
  1. Similar to writing in English, transitional words and phrase are very important in writing, since it helps to improve the context of the essay and make the writing flow much better. There is a lot of Khmer’s transitional words,  therefore it is essential for us to remember and become familiar with those words. Choosing the ideal words is also very important in writing because some of the words will not suit to the context. The text below is same example:
ម្យាងវិញទៀត

យ៉ាងណាក៏ដោយ

ជាមួយគ្នានេះដែរ

តាមពិតទៅ

មិនត្រឹមតែប៉ុណ្ណោះ

អាស្រ័យហេតុនេះ

ជាងនេះទៅទៀត

ដូច្នេះហើយ

ទោះបីជា

  1. Being able to take relevant notes is a very useful skill to have in life. Even though, Khmer is our first language, but still it is so hard to take important notes, especially when the speaker speaks very fast. To improve this skill, the learning facilitator, Nen Sokha, had us do a small exercise, which was listen to an 15 minutes interview and write a summarized for one to two minutes long. That task was tough because deleting important information is hard, sometimes I can’t decide between which is important and useless notes. The text below is a small peak on our summarize:

Past Tense and Irregular Verb Review

To practice the past tense and irregular verb, I wrote a short story in past tense about one of my favorite childhood memories. The paragraph below is my story:

About six years ago, I was a grade four student in my local government school in Takeo province. I walked to school throughout my life as a student since the start of the first grade to the end of 3rd grade academic year. Sometimes while I walked from school back to my home, I felt upset about myself because I did not get access to transportation so I couldn’t go out with friends. however, rather than allowing this problem to stop me from working hard, I kept myself strong and instead I pushed myself to tried harder and helped with my mom’s business more and more. I was shocked when I saw my dad bought a brand new bike as my birthday present. At that moment, he made my dream came true, so I grabbed his face and kissed him for the first time of my life. At my first day of 4th grade, I rode my bike to school for the first time. When I rode my bike, I thought about all the work that my parent has put into getting this bike, which made me cried every time I’ve thought of it.
