Researching what is research

In order for us to do good at something, we need to really understand the foundation of those tasks. Therefore, the mission of our Khmer essential is to research about anything and potential take all of those research information to create a book that can be use all over Cambodia and the worlds. The first week of this lecture, we did a lot of research the word research from five main difference source, two from the Cambodian dictionary and the others from Oxford, Longman, and Google. The conclusion of this research is that all the sources got the same meaning. In addition to the word, we also did research on the potential space and source that we can use for any research paper. The text below is our definition in Khmer:

Projects In Khmer Essential

There are five essential mini projects we have learned and worked on the last seven weeks. Those project is a skill in Khmer everyone needs to become a better writer, reader, speaker and listener.

  1. The first topic we studied about was composing a formal speech to many audiences. Performing a formal speech in Cambodia is tough since the language needed to respect the structure of the culture and the ranking of the audiences. We can’t just express hello and introduce the speech, it includes many more protocols we have to follow to make the speech become eligible. The text below is an example:
  1. Similar to writing in English, transitional words and phrase are very important in writing, since it helps to improve the context of the essay and make the writing flow much better. There is a lot of Khmer’s transitional words,  therefore it is essential for us to remember and become familiar with those words. Choosing the ideal words is also very important in writing because some of the words will not suit to the context. The text below is same example:
ម្យាងវិញទៀត

យ៉ាងណាក៏ដោយ

ជាមួយគ្នានេះដែរ

តាមពិតទៅ

មិនត្រឹមតែប៉ុណ្ណោះ

អាស្រ័យហេតុនេះ

ជាងនេះទៅទៀត

ដូច្នេះហើយ

ទោះបីជា

  1. Being able to take relevant notes is a very useful skill to have in life. Even though, Khmer is our first language, but still it is so hard to take important notes, especially when the speaker speaks very fast. To improve this skill, the learning facilitator, Nen Sokha, had us do a small exercise, which was listen to an 15 minutes interview and write a summarized for one to two minutes long. That task was tough because deleting important information is hard, sometimes I can’t decide between which is important and useless notes. The text below is a small peak on our summarize:

Past Tense and Irregular Verb Review

To practice the past tense and irregular verb, I wrote a short story in past tense about one of my favorite childhood memories. The paragraph below is my story:

About six years ago, I was a grade four student in my local government school in Takeo province. I walked to school throughout my life as a student since the start of the first grade to the end of 3rd grade academic year. Sometimes while I walked from school back to my home, I felt upset about myself because I did not get access to transportation so I couldn’t go out with friends. however, rather than allowing this problem to stop me from working hard, I kept myself strong and instead I pushed myself to tried harder and helped with my mom’s business more and more. I was shocked when I saw my dad bought a brand new bike as my birthday present. At that moment, he made my dream came true, so I grabbed his face and kissed him for the first time of my life. At my first day of 4th grade, I rode my bike to school for the first time. When I rode my bike, I thought about all the work that my parent has put into getting this bike, which made me cried every time I’ve thought of it.

Persuasive speech exercise

On the 15th of August, our learning facilitator have me write a short persuasive speech about a book that I found interesting to convince others to read it as well. The book that I chose to write about was the crossover written by Kwame Alexander. The excerpt below is my persuasive speech:

Good morning ladies and gentleman, today I’m going to share something that have changed my live. Many of you would say that having a lot of money will change my live, but it is not. Read, read, read and read. You all might wonder why did I said this words so many times, but reading is the main factor that have changed the way I live my today’s live. I have read many books from fiction to non-fiction, business book to cartoon, but the one book that is always stuck in my change and I think that one that really change what I think is the Crossover. Crossover is a very unique book and it written in a poetic way, which make the readers more excited. This book show how basketball change their high school life. The author used basketball lesson as an analogy for live lesson. For instance, you can’t miss any free throw in basketball game because it is the most easy thing to get point and it a free opportunity for you. The example above shows that you can give up on an easy task in live because that easy task is the foundation to complete a more challenging work in the future.

Quote responses

Mahatma Gandhi said “You must be the change that you wish to see in the world.” This quote is very inspirational for me because it is very relatable to the real world and it is actually how every changes should happen. Making changes is a tough thing to do and accept, sometimes it can affect you as an individual either in a developing or challenging way. To create a world that full of happiness people to live in, every single person should look at the issues that are happening in their society or a thing that they do not like about being in this society, then this is the opportunity for you to start making action to solve all of the problems. By doing so, you will be able to live a in world that you wish to live.

What are you waiting for? Tos Tov!!

Did you know that Cambodian taxi drivers experience difficulties finding passengers? And did you know that the passengers have a hard time to finding the right driver at the right time, to go where they need to go?

After a few weeks me, my wonderful teammates and a mentor from French help come up with a solution to solve this problem. That is called Tos Tov, Tos Tov is an app that provides the connection between the driver and the passenger. This means we are giving three main benefits to them: 1 the Cambodian drivers can find more passengers 2- saving passengers’ time of waiting. Once this system works together we will have less traffic and safer roads.

Unlike other alternatives app that already exists. We have come up with two features that will revolutionize the way Cambodian think about the app. The first feature is the innovation by SMS. The second one is the power of the community.

What motivates us to have the commitment to accomplish this is the vision of creating a better Cambodia and a better world with safer roads and more convenient travel options.

Liger Digital Currency

Liger Digital Currency (LDC) is a project that influences everyone in the Liger family, and the outside world as well. It’s basically about creating a platform that allows people to send and receive money through technology, such as smartphones or computers. The idea of this project was started by the Founder of Liger Learning Center, which is Trevor Gile. He says that we should create a digital currency system that will be used by everyone at Liger. It must be safe, secure and convenient . I chose to take this opportunity as an Exploration. The first week we started to explore the Bitcoin Mechanical System and their features to learn more and see what features that we could in corporate in the LDC. Then, we learned that Bitcoin is a decentralized system because they use blockchain. After many discussions about the platform, we decided to have three main teams in the LDC exploration, that teams are the Database, UI & UX team and a Communication team. The UI & UX team is the one who designs the website and makes the user interact with the website easily. Database is the team that best fits me because I have some experience coding JavaScript. The two members on this team are Sreyneang L and I. My team’s task is not a very fun job to code because there were no visual displays. Most of the time the database team is the one who is responsible for the back-end of the platform, like storing the data of the user in a very secure place, and making sure it doesn’t get lost. For example, if you are sending me 10 Pedros (name of our currency, where one Pedro = one US dollar), my job is to add that transaction to the transaction record and also to subtract the money from your account and then add the 10 Pedros to my account total. The most challenging part for me in this exploration is seeing the big picture of the whole project. This means that I am only working on my task and it’s hard to think about the other parts of the project and how they will all combine together. In the end, I managed to start understanding it better and the team was working well as a group and our first prototype was successfully made.Don’t miss my next post!

Cookbook exploration

In the senior generation, Liger students will cook their own food. Not all students know how to cook, right? So, they need some references to help them. That is why this book was created.

This book contains a lot of different food styles including Khmer, Western, and fusion. A group of nine students worked really hard to find the recipes and make sure it is acceptable for the students to cook by themselves. We broke up the styles of food into many different sections such as, salad, meat, poultry, seafood, and etc. These dishes can be cooked for breakfast and dinner (also maybe lunch).

We hope from now on everyone can cook by themselves, no matter where you are. Also, we hope that this book will help you to cook delicious meals for your friends, family, and yourselves.

I join the the Largest Celebration of STEM festival

I had participate in the Cambodia Science, Technology, Engineering and Math festival on Sunday, May 7, 2016, to learn more about STEM. This event is a great opportunity for me and the world to learn more about STEM that presented by Zaman International School and Governments students. There are many STEM concept that I will help my future projects in the school such as the First Tech Challenge, Underwater Robot Competition and so on. The projects and the prototypes that they shown me was amazing, but the explanation is very bad because when I and some of my friends go to their booth, they do not explain to us until we ask them to. Also, they only show us the outcome but the science behind it, they are not explained. So I have to ask them many questions to allow myself to understand more. From the Liger Learning Center, we have one booth and the students from my school show their STEM project that they work on. There are many people are participating in the event. The Secretary of state also come to look at Cambodian student STEM student too. At last, the most exciting part of the event is we got the certificate from the government for participating the event.

I complete the Mekong River Swim !!!!!

I participated in the Mekong River Swim for three years in the row. Each year I always got a different experience. The first time I do it, I taught myself that I can’t let the current push me. When I let the current push me, I can’t swim up to the finish line. Then I take that experience and I used it in the second year. So in the second year, I have learned one more lesson which is I can’t start too fast. If I start too fast it will be made me so tired to swim afterward. This year I think the event was very nice because I have new friends are joining and the swimmer is mostly junior. The river this year, I think the current of the water is a lot higher from the last years and I think that what decrease my time. I love swimming in the Mekong river and I going to swim again next years.
